A Youtuber Angela of internationally ME shared a list of overrated spots in Tokyo in her video. It has been two years since she released this video, but the things remain pretty much the same for the spots that were mentioned (as of July 2019).

Agreed

Here’s the list of “overrated places” that she mentioned and whether we agreed or not:

  • Tokyo Tower
  • Tokyo Skytree
Tokyo Tower

Generally speaking, towers look better from afar and not necessarily from the top – Tokyo Tower and Tokyo Skytree are no exception. Especially for the Tokyo Skytree, considering the high price ticket and the long waiting time, it’s not worth going up the tower.

Skytree

You’ll have a better time walking around Shiba Park (near Tokyo Tower) or wandering around Asakusa & Sumida River (near Skytree).

Shiba Park

Not-agreed

  • Takeshita Dori (Street), Harajuku
  • Golden Gai, Shinjuku

Takeshita Dori

I don’t often visit these places as a local Japanese, but I have to admit that these places are unique. Takeshita Street, the central part of Harajuku, the mecca of Japanese subculture, is worth visiting at least once, although you might get tired of too many people.

Takeshita Dori (Takeshita Street) is the focal point of Harajuku’s teenage culture. Its side streets, which are lined by many trendy shops, fashion boutiques, used clothes stores, crepe stands and fast food outlets geared towards the fashion and trend-conscious teens.

Golden Gai

I would say the same about Golden Gai. Shinjuku Golden Gai (新宿ゴールデン街) is a small area of Kabukicho, Shinjuku, Tokyo, famous both as an area of architectural interest and for its nightlife. It is composed of a network of six narrow alleys, connected by even narrower passageways which are just about wide enough for a single person to pass through. Over 200 tiny shanty-style bars, clubs and eateries are squeezed into this area.

Golden Gai, Shinjuku

Most of my friends from abroad enjoy visiting and drinking at Golden Gai probably because there’s no other bar area in Tokyo that is like Golden Gai. For the cover charge, 1,000 yen is not too bad considering the price standard in Tokyo.

However, remember this golden rule when you’re drinking in Shinjuku, NEVER FOLLOW A TOUT as you would get ripped-off.
